Ultrasound Scans

Gastroenterologists use ultrasound to investigate abdominal pain, abnormal liver enzymes.and to screen for liver cancer in patients with cirrhosis and/or hepatitis C and B. Ultrasound is one of the best ways to look for gallstones. Ultrasound of the pelvis is very useful for examining the ovaries and uterus particulalry. Ultrasound is often used to guide liver and other biopsies.

Specialized applications of ultrasound include upper GI endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) that is used to examine the pancreas and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) used to examine certain rectal masses.

Ultrasound is painless, risk free procedure that uses sound waves rather than radiation or a magnetic fields to generate images.
